Our Story

As one of Japan’s oldest international clinics, Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic has been meeting the needs of the international community since 1951.

Our clinic was founded during the American occupation of Japan, as the growing numbers of the diplomatic community felt the need for an international clinic. At their request, a British surgeon Dr Gren Wedderburn and an American physician Dr Tom Gentry opened “Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic” in 1951, a short distance away on the same street from its current location.

With a special remit from the Japanese government for international doctors to practice here, the clinic soon became well known throughout the international community. In a place where everything is so different, the clinic was a place where the international community could feel at home, with medicine practiced in a familiar way.

Six years after the founding of the clinic, the construction began on what would soon become Tokyo Tower, and we have been a neighbor to this famous landmark ever since.

The clinic moved to its current location in 1976, and has operated at this site continuously under the ownership of several generations of physician partners. To this day, the clinic remains independently owned by the physicians practicing there.

From its founding more than seven decades ago to the current day, we at Tokyo Medical and Surgical Clinic strive to make this clinic a “home away from home”, providing friendly and familiar medical care to Tokyo’s international community.
